Spiced cranberry apple chutney recipe combines fresh cranberries with tart Granny Smith apples and warming spices for a lovely alternative to traditional cranberry preparations. This sophisticated version elevates standard cranberry sauce through the addition of apples and complex spice blends that create more interesting flavors. The use of Granny Smith apples provides tartness that complements the cranberries while adding texture and natural sweetness. This lovely alternative appeals to those seeking more complex holiday condiments beyond simple cranberry sauce. Original recipe (1X) yields 48 servings

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries

  • 2 cups white sugar

  • 3 tablespoons water, or more as needed

  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped

  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and chopped

  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice

  • 1 cup golden raisins

  • ¼ cup pecans (Optional)

  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 pinch salt, or to taste

Directions

  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, and water in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook until cranberries have popped, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in celery, apple, orange zest, orange juice, raisins, pecans, ginger, cloves, and salt; cook, stirring frequently, until celery is tender and sauce is reduced, about 35 minutes. Remove from the heat, cover the saucepan, and let chutney stand to thicken, about 15 minutes. Serve warm.

Cook’s Note:

This will store nicely for up to three weeks in the refrigerator in a tightly covered container. It can easily be reheated in the microwave; just be sure to cover loosely.
