Original recipe (1X) yields 36 servings

  • 2 tablespoons anise seed

  • 3 tablespoons rum

  • 1 ¼ cups unsalted butter

  • ¾ cup white sugar

  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves

Directions

  1. Place anise seeds and rum in a small bowl. Set aside to marinate, preferably overnight.

  2. Beat butter, sugar, and vanilla together in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in anise seed-rum mixture. Whisk in egg. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, and cloves. Stir into butter mixture until well blended. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.

  3. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown at edges, about 10 minutes. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before moving to wire racks to cool completely.
